Empowering Youth Through Education

Q & A: Carmen Sosa

Carmen Sosa is the mother of Fulfillment Fund scholar Milton Sosa, a senior at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.

Q: What impact has the program had on you?
The impact the program has had on me is the help they have provided my son money-wise and the encouragement to leave the state. I saw the support they gave him and the advice that he could go to college. I did not have to worry and could be calm. They gave us certainty that he would go far.

Q: How have your children changed since being admitted to the Mentor Program?
I have seen how much he has grown more confident in himself, more responsible, and more mature. This program has made him mature and have the ability to make his own decisions that he would not have made before. He had a mentor, who motivated Milton to go through with his goals. The mentor was a great help to our family, especially because it was difficult for Milton. When he felt that he could not keep going, the mentor would say, “you can do it, keep trying!”  The mentor helped Milton see that there is more than one way to move forward. I have seen him grow into a hardworking, disciplined person.

Q: What advice would you give to parents who want their kids to go to college?
My advice to parents is to give yourself the opportunity to learn more about the Fulfillment Fund program and what they can do. Look at the type of help they can provide both economically and morally.

Q: What would you like to see more in the program?
I would like to see more people who speak Spanish, that way parents have more confidence to ask questions and interact more.
